In 1876, Adam Shattinger established a music store in St. Louis, Missouri. He sold musical instruments and published original works. Eventually he teamed up with the Kranich and Bach Piano Co. to sell their pianos. Sheet music, organs, and other instruments were gradually added to the store's inventory.
The store remained in the Shattinger family until 1948 when the retail sheet music portion of the business was sold to William Shaw and became known as the Shattinger Music Company. Shaw expanded the choral and school business and established an instrumental band department.
In 1957, Shaw sold the business to two of his employees, John Walters and John Hess. They continued to expand the service to schools, churches and colleges. Departments for handbell music accompaniment tapes and CDs have been added. Our extensive inventory is constantly reviewed to make sure that we stock the current offerings as well as the older music. Annual workshops/clinics are held for school and church choral directors, band and orchestra directors, piano, organ and handbell choirs. The store also offers an extensive selection of Karaoke CDs and CDGs featuring old favorites as well as the latest hits.
In July of 2000, the store was purchased by two long-time employees, Jim Cochran and Linda Bagsby. They continue to build on the traditions and standards set by the previous owners.
Knowledge of music is an important part of the Shattinger tradition. Our departments are staffed with musicians who are active in their respective fields and conversant with the literature. They stand ready to answer your questions, make suggestions, or research that obscure piece of music. If it is in print we will be able to obtain it for you - if we don't already have it in stock!
Thanks for visiting our website. We look forward to filling your musical needs!!
